It’s not as black and white as dry and wet seasons when it comes to San Blas weather. After living here for quite some time, we’ve come to realize that it’s a bit more nuanced. While Panama may have those 2 seasons, the weather in the San Blas Islands doesn’t always follow the same pattern.

With each passing year sailing the San Blas islands, you begin to realize the existence of a potential third season in terms of weather. This special season offers ideal sailing conditions and falls right in between the typical dry and wet seasons.

From May to August, you can enjoy the 3rd season.

Seasonal weather patterns and traditional climate in the San Blas Islands, Panama:

December to April: The dry season—or high season—brings sunny skies and no rain, a well-known period for tourists.

May to November: The wet season—or low season—brings rain and cloud cover, a quieter time with fewer tourists and boat activities.

The third season spans the months following the dry season:

December to April: The dry season in San Blas brings sunny days, no rain, and some pretty strong winds. The water visibility can be a bit affected on the windiest days, but tourists still flock to the area during this time, which is also known as the high season.

May to August: 3rd season, December to August. The weather can change often, sometimes with quick rain showers and gentle breezes. The water is crystal clear, ideal for snorkeling. Not many tourists around, and few boats in sight.

September to November: Wet season. Rain and abundant clouds prevail. Continuous rainfall (which typically does not persist for long periods) can reduce water visibility due to muddy river water. Amid minimal wind and the absence of tourists or boats, it’s an ideal time to embrace the serene natural beauty.

More about the 3rd season

April is known as one of the busiest months in the dry season, especially with the Easter holidays. Towards the end of the month, the number of tourists is likely to start decreasing. Occasionally, there may be some showers, but they usually don’t last long, usually just an hour or so. However, it’s important to note that these short rainfalls vary across different parts of Panama. San Blas, for example, benefits from the prevailing Trade Winds that come from the East, which helps to quickly dissipate any humidity. Unlike other sailing areas like Bocas del Toro, San Blas enjoys a shorter rainy period.
